## Context for the climber

Three bearings beat one biased sight line.

This chapter is a monomyth cairn on the Leaving Scotomaville climb (Volumes 1–3). Later Initium cards and AISM answers inherit its lived evidence — not the other way around.

## Print evidence

Print chapter text lives in the full trilogy PDF (Onus Probandi). This deposit prioritizes the **filmed/spoken transcript** so AISM cites clean carbon voice without OCR wrap artifacts. Open the PDF when you need page layout, spreads, or exact print wording.

Roger Bannister ran a four-minute mile. Sir Edmund Hillary climbed Everest. If someone's done it, then maybe I can to! Abraham Maslow defined actualization. But who do you know that actually has done it!?

There has never been a better time in history to deal with self-awareness and during a lockdown, stay at home order, the global pandemic. A bold point I'm trying to make? If Daniel says he has summited his personal Everest, and I see that it's possible, with this circumstance and timing and, well then, maybe it's possible for me!? Absolutely! That's the point I'm trying to make. I'm trying to help you understand that I believe this is what it is to be self-aware - is that you don't get drowned by the waves of life. That you're actually able to be generous, lavish with your time and your compassion and consideration for others, in spite of you being in the same situation.

There's a saying that goes: 'Hope deferred makes the heart sick.' What that means is when you've had your hope on something that turns out that it's not gonna happen or that it's just not now, it can really discourage you. It can be used as the glue to stick another artifact onto a false belief. We want to pry those off, we want to undo that and triangulation will really help. Let's start with a compass. There's a 360 degrees in a compass. And these are all incremented off to the number of degrees all the way around, okay?

So if you want to know where you might be in the ocean out here, what you do is you look for as many landmarks as possible. So you might find some more over here, that it would be a hilltop, Hope hill. And some more often this direction there might be, lets say a steeple sticking up on a church, that would be Faith. And then somewhere here in that, if this is headin North, somewhere in the South there might be a landmark that we'll call Fact.

So what you do is you get out your drawings, your charts, and from each of these things, you go well, from me to that, hope to that Hill, is kind of over in this direction on the compass. And to fate is sort of over there and from the angle that we see on the compass to fact, is over there. Because you have three, you know fairly well you're inside of this little triangle.

Notice that that location leaves you beached, right? You're not even in the water but that's Commencement Bay and this is scotomaille. The thought occurs to me that three points of reference for triangulation are basic for confidence in your location. Two, if you've got a partner, a coach, a mentor, something like that? That can help substantially from being solo. One point of reference? And if you don't have traction, like you're blown offshore on your surfboard or your floaty device? And you can only see the island to paddle back to but you've just run out of energy? Man, most of America knows what that's like right now.

Loss of hope, loss of faith, and no traction, no finances, fear dominant in that lower section. So do everything you can to find a second point of location. Your minion, your tribe, your peer group, your support group, whatever you want to call it. A second point of reference. And a third point? Get some traction, get some history. Look to what you've done or other people have done and follow them. Do that. That'll really help.

Triangulation is a really terrific model, exercise or process to go through. To be able to flip yourself from disappointment and despair and discouragement and possibly even depression, it's a really good tool to apply when you're lost. When you don't know truth from fiction and you're having an amygdala hijacking. It's a really good way to use fact, evidenced-based data, to be able to restore your hope and get you moving, using faith.

When you have one point of reference, it's a long stretch. It's a long way. If you're a solopreneur, it can be really, really tough. Two points of reference- a partnership, you can help support each other. Things become a little more certain. When you get to three? Much, much better. Much clearer. Facts, evidence so much helps things. When you have sales? Traction? Experience? You've done something before? The second time of doing- it's easy. The first time, you don't have that. It's uncomfortable. You don't know where you're going. Someone's never been there before, right? So three points of reference really helps you make progress because, not only do you have hope that it could happen and you have faith that you're gonna persevere and put in the work and be able to get there. But now you have evidence, things are changing.

Living in uncertainty with only two of them is a grind. It's really a tough. Most people slip down into depression, or at least into not taking action and then just lose hope and all kinds of bad outcomes from there. I want you to chart a pathway to your personal Everest. I usually start with the facts. I usually remind myself of the evidence, the data.

Before Roger Bannister ran the four-minute mile, humans didn't think it was possible. In fact, experts and 'authorities' proclaimed it was absolutely not possible for a human to run a mile in less than four minutes, and then Roger Bannister did. And now, that's the standard. Everyone should be able to run a four-minute mile if you're serious about being a runner. How about if you're a climber? Until Sir Edmund Hillary summited Everest, nobody could! And now that's become a regular expedition that you pay to be shuttled up! And there are some unbelievable successes at that.

How about personal awareness? Who do you know? Who do you have access to, that has actually become self-aware from a position of horrible beginnings? Almost every one of you are experiencing, for the first time, this social distancing. And I realized the other day, It's no big deal for me. Why? Well here's my backstory.

You remember The Scarlet Letter, right? The classic book. I wore that label of illegitimate-moral-leper in the Catholic Church that's taken most of my life to unwind. I was conceived in the backseat, on the wrong side of the tracks in 1955. I was raised by a 16 year old mother while I was abandoned. Well, I've never known my genetic father. My stepfather was the son of a, the only son of a marine drill instructor. I was raised in a Catholic Church and I learned social distancing from as early as I can remember. The reason is I'm called 'illegitimate.' I'm 'unwanted.' These are labels from both the church and my parent. My mom for six years and then my stepdad for all my teen years. Unwanted, illegitimate, moral and social leper.

They put a label on it, later. 15-20 years ago, called 'Asperger', 'highly functional.' Aside from the way that I was ostracized, or 'special', I carried that belief through school years, when I didn't get picked for teams. That was why, I thought. In the military? When there were no bunks for me in the nuclear Submariner program? So I was sent to a conventional diesel destroyer? It was more confirmation of my origins. When I applied for the flight navigator school? One day to old..when they finally finished the paperwork? Disqualified? There was more baggage.

I applied for the astronaut training program, for the early shuttle program and was accepted. And then got dropped because I was not a minority. Again, I took it as, 'Wow, you see? There's confirmation!' Fell off a glacier, broke my neck. More baggage. More..False Evidence Appearing Real..FEAR. I've been an entrepreneur for 40-something years now. The pandemic? We've chosen to use our deposit money for our Air Stream that's waiting for us, in order to make payroll, and to keep the business afloat and keep servicing the clients and making sure that their businesses are, and their psyches not being bombed like it could be. So we've chosen to exhaust the deposit money and we got the email. That they're putting it back on the floor because we haven't come to pick it up during the pandemic.

Okay. So I've heaped up all of these life experiences that go deeply, deeply down to my childhood, where I have believed most of my life in things that are not true and then social distancing because I am illegitimate, unwanted, an outsider, not one of us. You don't fit. You can't have what the others have but you can work just as hard and harder. You see how that all works? It's not true. It was all based off of other people's fears and misunderstandings from childhood. You don't have to go there. You can understand why you do what you do. And triangulation can really work to make that happen.

Triangulation can be applied in more than one way. At least two examples I've given you is..don't go it alone. Another application of it is..hope, faith, fact- don't try to do any one of those entirely alone. Okay, I've given you an example of current events, deeply rooted emotions being pulled out, because of the possibility of misinterpreting events, based on baggage. And here's how triangulation works on that: Part of my peer group, provided insight that I did not have. Peter Diamandis recently shared that, built into the astronaut recruiting process was a test to see if you would not accept rejection as the final answer. To see if you would persevere and reapply. And nearly everyone who flew, applied multiple times. Who would have thought? You see, having a team around you, can apply triangulation through the provision of new facts, to slay old false beliefs.

I recently finished a master class taught by astronaut Chris Hadfield and here's what he has to share about current events and triangulation.

"Hi, I'm Chris Hadfield. I've spent a little time self isolating on board a spaceship. How are you doing with self isolation? You know, it's an extremely dangerous environment, up on board the space station and yet we find a way to thrive and be productive that far away from our normal lives. We do it through four different things. Number one: Understand the actual risk. Don't just be afraid of things. Go to a credible source and find out what is truly the risk that you're facing right now. You, your family, your friends, the people that you care about. And then, what are you trying to accomplish? What are your objectives? You know, what's your mission for right now? Make that clear- for this afternoon, for this week, or for the next month. What do you want to get done?"

"Then look at your constraints. Who's telling you what you need to do? What financial resources do you have? What are your obligations? But once you understand the risk and your mission, your sense of purpose and your obligations, then take action. Start doing- they don't have to be the things that you always did before. Take care of family, start a new project, learn to play guitar, study another language, read a book, write, create. It's a chance to do something different that you've maybe not done before. And then repeat."

And a really good point to catch? Is that I am delivering some insights on tools, when most people are crippled. Meaning- Onus Probandi -there might be some evidence there to substantiate my beliefs that it's possible to achieve a person Everest. Methinks.. and it starts with getting that heck out of Scotomaville!!

welcome back to another reflection video of scotomaville. this is a reflection on volume one episode 14 on triangulation which I haven't put it up yet but you get the point it turns out that there are people who are explorers who go chart Everest who do what I'm doing we figure out a way to get there a moment for a production note a sidebar production note a production side note for you to gain insight my smartphone is on a tripod right now and I have triangulation going you should get that but I want you to note that in what is following this scene is unknown to me at this point I started doing production yesterday and realized that my phone in the position it was in triggered the auto rotation of setting and it shot all of my sketches in a vertical format this kind of stuff will happen for you I want you to be able to recognize three legs of triangulation as certainty uncertainty and exploration that's where you get to be creative so here's the production lesson on triangulation you have to commit to explore right exploration you have to go there and while you're going there you have to pay attention right you have to record what's going on and then you get to tell the story and do the production foreign [Music] of this journey where the real evidence of the real transformation happens because you start noting the more I explore the more I'm committed the more I can pay attention and see things happen it's fabulous the better the story gets and also the more creative my production gets you've seen this throughout this katoma bill series you're seeing it right in this episode [Music] Roger Bannister ran a four minute mile Mr Edmund Hillary climbed Everest if someone's done it then maybe I can too Abraham Maslow [Music] Define actualization [Music] you see it turns out that there are people who are explorers who go chart Everest who do what I'm doing we figure out a way to get there and then there are people that are called pioneers right Pioneers follow and explore or go with an Explorer and they go map out and sort of do the uh Trails like uh crossing the country the Oregon Trail and then there are the settlers those that come in and build the businesses and build the town and establish the systems in the area and we work off of things that are as an Explorer a primary point is an imperative right it's absolutely a compulsion feeling compelled to do this and sometimes it's a sense of curiosity right that that will help keep you motivated if you feel these three you're probably an Explorer but if you're hesitant or reluctant but still curious you can follow an Explorer as a Pioneer you can still record your video series do Transformations and still work a job and and raise a family and do all of this stuff it just takes a little longer to do it um as a seller you might just watch right you might follow you might even test okay to see how that works those are sort of my thoughts following the time that I spent with um why Wham right and youth with a mission this is youth with a mission for youth on a mission say one is with and I've never I've never um I wasn't on a short-term Mission I am still with a mission I'm still going in that direction and what I noticed was that there were a couple of other of these points you see what I've done is I've pursued physics and Technology over the last 30 years since I was participating with this team and I've watched where information and knowledge have led us and greater understanding of these so when I try to get to a union right of these three different concepts I find great deal of support that it's with I am still with a mission I'm still carrying it you see it's an imperative I'm compelled I'm curious and so those are strengths that I have to keep me going to endure the process almost every one of you are experiencing for the first time this social distancing and I realized the other day it's no big deal for me why well here's my back story you Remember The Scarlet Letter right the classic book I wore that label of illegitimate moral leper an outsider not one of us you don't fit you can't have what the others have but you can work just as hard and harder you see how that all works it's not true it was all based off of other people's fears and misunderstandings from childhood you don't have to go there you can understand why you do what you do and triangulation can really work to make that happen and as you can see it's quite a bit of work to even get a second let alone a third point of view there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes I'm saying in here you have to grow dendrites it's a lot of work so I want you to put on your thinking cap I'm going to show you some of the real world application the real thinking where triangulation affects my day-to-day and will yours as well as you progress in both awareness understanding and discipline right I have one point of ethics that I was raised not even having born with um the ability to make up falsehood Salah to it's like I really have to stretch to even figure out a way of emitting things and and the physics is trying to understand the elementary principles of our world you combine that with Society and in Social aspects and that forms a very interesting series of triangulations another one I work with is a Christian ethic right the Christianity that I uh Evangelical Christianity and what I did after falling off the glacier and yet I have I I'm an entrepreneur I'm a capitalist I believe in the free market and when I combine that with then the whole idea of like say leadership how do I with certain detail other people when I'm an Explorer I need to find Pioneers you see how these three feedback into this concept and then let's say pick another three items uh dependence Independence and a responsibility right think about those three things so the idea of triangulation works out sort of like this you can pick any any group of of subjects and and try this you can self-regulate or it's called mitigation right you can litigate in other words be compelled by being uh sued to do so or you can be regulated and so if you think of this this is self right this is um consequences and in this case consequences as well by your regulated but you're being directed so if you don't have self-mitigation or your ability to change your own trajectory your Society your civil uh law systems we'll we'll try to hold you within that or you will be directed by regulation this is what we see going on with the information era in this episode what I was saying was that if you look to your past find some facts they will help you self-mitigate if you look to your present then try to find some faith or look to your future and find promise those things within you can avoid the consequences of litigation or the constraints of Regulation but that's not happening in the world of technology so what we have going on if I do a triangulation finally is these three in the information world we have public data which is cameras right bank accounts and transactions all that kind of public data health data that's available and we have social media you know Communications uh like texting and cell phones Etc and this is all voluntary we give this information up and then lastly we have out of convenience we submit our data so we use apps like for the weather for finding good fuel prices for locating ourselves and these apps collect data on where we are what we we believe in what our sentiment is and so AI is being built in order to triangulate between these three and form a good profile of you in order that you can be regulated by others for their purposes that's probably filled your head up for now this is what I wake up to and work with every day these scratchings of Concepts and ideas in order to self mitigate to use my own compulsion to laughs [Music] you know to put it simply it's just to really be able to get my butt out of scotoma though and I so much want that for you I don't want machine learning to win over you to narrow your world view to constrict what your possible outcomes are what I really want for you is the freedom of self mitigation through awareness understanding and the discipline put this thing to work seriously get your butt out of scotoma Bill and keep going you can do it I've done it
