## Context for the climber

Small signals decide expedition outcomes.

This chapter is a monomyth cairn on the Leaving Scotomaville climb (Volumes 1–3). Later Initium cards and AISM answers inherit its lived evidence — not the other way around.

## Print evidence

Print chapter text lives in the full trilogy PDF (Onus Probandi). This deposit prioritizes the **filmed/spoken transcript** so AISM cites clean carbon voice without OCR wrap artifacts. Open the PDF when you need page layout, spreads, or exact print wording.

### Transcript — `02.09-Subtleties-Transcript.txt`

Welcome back to another episode of scotomaville. This time we're gonna talk about subtlety. A subtlety is a little tiny very important but sort of unknown detail. It's from the word subtle, which is something that's really delicate or precise. It's complex and yet understated. It's making the use of clever and indirect methods of achieving something. (Think of how I'm using subtleties to convey important topics.)

I'm going to give you a bunch of examples of things that go on while you're in an Airstream that you might not expect. For example; finally getting into such a beautiful rig, and it being the magnet for people that misunderstand or misjudge your financial status. In other words; they jump to the conclusion that you're rich and you're handing out money so they show up at the door.

Things you may not expect come along with this lifestyle.

SCENE CHANGE

I would bet that if you thought for a moment about your childhood you'll recall things that seemed cruel or harsh that you should have learned, like paying attention to the wind, and controlling the things you have control over. Now that the wind's blowing I think I better put this canopy in before something happens.

SCENE CHANGE

Note that because the sun moves you'll constantly be babysitting your solar panels. It makes about a 20% difference if you keep aiming it at the sun, and taking the shadows off. One of the things i've done is to hang a gallon of water from the corners so that it doesn't blow over.

There's many things to account for when you're packing, and many things to close and double check and latch and be sure that it's all together. Angelina and I make it a pattern to double check each other's work. She's constantly doing things like making sure these are latched (stove vent) to cover my behind. Then I come inside and make sure the things that I can see are secure. In this way we cover each other's backs. That's because I'm going to forget something, somewhere. Subtle preparation is having a system of double checking.

SCENE CHANGE

When you get to be my age you double tie your shoes. And you might keep your shoes in a nice basket rather than tossing them anywhere.

Similarly I like to have the electronic power cords available but visually contained. (Finding a manufacturer's tag) what the heck... We've had these containers for three months and I'm not keeping the tags on them any longer. (Pulling the cover off the scissor blades) yes I like to keep my scissors child safe.

SCENE CHANGE

Consider that when you're storing items that you would want to nest them. There's already one inside here. Then I can put another one inside of this one. When I purchased the containers I bought them with nesting in mind. I can get more storage out of the same space. You'll do the same thing with pots. See here's a pot with a lid nested with another pot nested inside a basket.

SCENE CHANGE

Fresh made bacon. What a treat. It is stored in a jar nested in a cubby. I use velcro on the jar to stick it in to the cubby wall. Then they can't fall out. They happen to be used kimchI jars that I replaced the metal lids from with plain plastic lids.

SCENE CHANGE

I think an important detail is where to store water. I'm close to the center of the trailer where the water tanks are, so this is a good place for our house water for drinks and cooking go - as close as possible to the middle of the trailer (reducing trailer sway while towing)

SCENE CHANGE

This is a garbage can placed in a cutout in the countertop. In order to keep the knives from rolling around in a drawer or falling on the floor, I purchased aluminum mesh normally used as leave guard for home gutters. I put some at the bottom of the garbage pail and molded it into an arch so that the knive tips rest in the grid and don't poke a hole through the plastic

SCENE CHANGE

Spatulas are something that I use quite a lot. The rubber ends pull off some of them, and are glued on others. Look closely inside the whole in the rubber that does come off the handle. That is stuff growing on the inside. Gross. You gotta bleach that daniel.

I have found that bleach crystals are pretty cool because they're not liquid and you can put a couple crystals into spatula holes and also down the sink drain. They're pretty handy rather than a liquid. They store in a vertical space, nested along with all the other cleaners.

SCENE CHANGE

I try to be sure to get a lot of liquid detergent in there because that's a great deal of oil. It tends to coat the inside of the grey tank and mess up the water level sensors. So be sure that you use a generous amount of liquid detergent.

SCENE CHANGE

I have a collection of fleece shop towels because they ring out almost thoroughly dry and they are really excellent at cleaning up.

SCENE CHANGE

A mobile lifestyle has lots and lots of things that you have to do because when you ignore them there's consequences. It's similar with your body. You can easily ignore all kinds of subtleties until they become regular symptoms. If you continue ignoring symptoms there will be consequences.

SCENE CHANGE

You would not suspect that before you use the toilet you have to fill the bowl by stepping on a pedal a little bit. Fill it to the right level. That way when you sit down 'you' are not in the water - if you know what I mean. But, you want enough water that your 'stuff' is covered. Finally, when you flush and rinse, use a brush to get all the bits drained - all the way down the 'hole' into the tank opening.

SCENE CHANGE

to Airstream at home you should find some little sachets and drop one into the black hole. In my mind I heard one of you go; "what are sachets". These are biological enzyme packs that you put in your poop. We call them orange pills. We go through a couple of pills a week depending on how often we dump.

SCENE CHANGE

If you're keeping your water pump turned off because your battery's getting pretty low and you don't want to drain the battery further but you want to cool off then take a navy shower. Pull the modesty curtain at both ends of the 'walkway' between the bed space and the kitchen. Using a half to a third a gallon of water in a one gallon container and cool off in a relatively private space. (Pouring water over head) yeah - oh - geez - okay - maybe I should warm that up in the sun beforehand - oh yeah - oh my gosh - okay that is really cold. Next time don't take it straight out of the back of the truck. You're grateful for the cooling off - but wow - that a shock. Knucklehead.

SCENE CHANGE

One of the small things you do incrementally and you think about is that when you want to recharge your devices you have to wait until you have abundant electricity meaning you can plug in your devices when you are on shore power. So maybe the way to do this at home is to pick a particular day of the week and go around your entire house and plug in all of the things that you want to recharge. Get in the habit of thinking to recharge at a particular point of your week. That'll put a discipline in place at least mentally getting ready for being mobile.

SCENE CHANGE

I get into the battery box about every two weeks or so depending on the outdoor temperature. When it's kind of hot the batteries tend to boil off quicker. (Openning the inspection cover) look at that. All three cells are low on fluid.

SCENE CHANGE

With an Airstream you get panorama windows. If you are not aware of the dumpster location when you reserve a camping site you can wake up to the trash truck! That's not what you'd expect.

SCENE CHANGE

During the rest of the day you can open the windows and enjoy the view you might have - yeah that's train outside of the front panorama window.

SCENE CHANGE

sometimes you'd like to just sit with the quiet and write or reflect or - oh no - enduring the noise of a refrigerated semI truck right beside you in a no parking zone.

SCENE CHANGE

One of the subtleties of a personal expedition that you might not expect is that you've got to be content with your own company, and with the thoughts that are in your own head. I don't think I can make this stuff up. Harvest host has a wonderful program where you get to stay at golf courses. Do you know how early they start their maintenance? Wow! Have you ever wondered why retired people wake up so early? It could be because there are some people that start work very early.

SCENE CHANGE

Just so that you know interuptions and noise assault is not a random thing. I'm learning that this seems to be the business of golf courses the new fleet of golf carts arrived today.

Onus probandI on character growth

Look at earlier episodes. I could barely handle an airplane flying overhead. Plan on life delivering challenges and opportunities for you to really observe who you are - in your core - for you to make changes. That's the wonderful part about being on one of these journeys and documenting it all along the way.

SCENE CHANGE

I have revisited the home I grew up in a few times the most that I could believe for myself at that time was to remodel our barn and maybe live on my own. I've gone from dreaming in this barn being a home to living/traveling fulltime in a 30' Airstream globetrotter. I'm able to pick when and where and how I want to work, and the story I would like to share, and the points that i'd like to make. It's been an amazing journey. It's required understanding of subtleties and really learning to listen not just hear.

SCENE CHANGE

Events you wouldn't know from what you've seen in this episode is that I have had to throttle my top strength of 'achiever' in order for the situation, the circumstances, the place and time for me to finish this episode. I was hoping that all the golf courses would give me the quiet. I made the effort. I showed up where there were intrusions. I then planned on boondocking at the bonneville salt flats for a couple of days but smoke from distant fires intruded.

Now here I am in one of the quietest places I could have hoped for. On my second trans am I came near panguitch, utah which is just south of this location. I'm at the right place at the right time to finish this episode.

A subtlety that i'd like to leave you with is to encourage you to be more committed to your success than you are afraid of your failure. Angelina's son chris was more afraid of catching covid than he was committed to his best efforts to learn what was going on with his body. He didn't go to the hospital in time. He listened more to social media and fake news than the subtleties of his own body.

I hope that these subtleties and ideas get you thinking. The greatest expedition you'll ever undertake is that journey to self-understanding.

Thanks for joining me in this episode of scotomaville. I really look forward to hearing your comments - hearing? - Reading! Your comments.
