## Context for the climber

Weather the sudden emotional and logistical storms.

This chapter is a monomyth cairn on the Leaving Scotomaville climb (Volumes 1–3). Later Initium cards and AISM answers inherit its lived evidence — not the other way around.

## Print evidence

Print chapter text lives in the full trilogy PDF (Onus Probandi). This deposit prioritizes the **filmed/spoken transcript** so AISM cites clean carbon voice without OCR wrap artifacts. Open the PDF when you need page layout, spreads, or exact print wording.

Welcome back to another episode of Scotomaville.

You would know that Angelina and I are living full-time in a 30-foot globetrotter. That's because we're loving the certainty of a place to sleep and the adventure - the uncertainty - the variety if you will. It helps us become more responsible, and not just to grow old but to mature.

In this episode we're going to talk about squalls. Yeah outbursts... Uh, what you don't know about me, or maybe what you do know about me.

You might recall that the first time you go somewhere is a mix of exhilaration, excitement, anticipation. You've looked at all the apps. You've read the reviews. We get to imagine an outcome by watching other people's channels and learning from them the things that we should go for and avoid. Even though you prepare your best things happen. Squalls. Downpours. Outbursts. Unexpected crazy stuff happens.

The evidence that I can provide you is that your expedition (a journey with a purpose) in some uncanny way will provide you with exactly what you need. You've heard that when the student is ready the teacher will appear? I'm not just telling you, i'm showing you that is real. That stuff really happens. I have no way to explain how or even why. I just know it does happened on all three of my trans americans, all of them back to back, because I was changing and trying to help people.

Here I am now with a full-size airstream still doing that.

SCENE CHANGE

We needed to go to Oklahoma city to purchase this airstream. We had to wait for a month in a hotel.

The Hillary Step used to be at the top of everest. It's was a vertical face of rock. You think you're almost done and then slam the impossible.

SCENE CHANGE

Once again we're down to just a day or two from moving into our airstream and the jar is empty and we're in a hotel room for three weeks now. We're tired of waiting. I need to have you understand this (delay - setbacks and squalls) is the journey. This is how you find out what you're made of.

While waiting I did something I was familiar with. I decided i'd have another kidney stone. That is very painful. It was excruciating. It took over a week to pass. I got to go to the veterans administration emergency room.

So while I was at the va I got to get vaccinated. What an adventure all of that was. My dread of going into the va turned out to be unfounded. Yes, I was wrong. Scotoma. It turned out to be a turning point.

The good thing about experience is that once we figure something out we don't have to be freaked out about it in the future.

SCENE CHANGE

It's noon on a Saturday with a clear sky in Oklahoma City. We know that this is what happens in this place at this time. Citywide emergency alarms are blazing loudly. I'm not alarmed this time, as I was the first time I experienced it.

SCENE CHANGE

The massaging showerhead beating on my left hip relaxes those muscles.

SCENE CHANGE

That was a rough session. I remember numerous climbs on the transamericas that came at the end of the day. Imagine being exhausted, possibly a little dehydrated, and climbing another 1200-1500 feet up to a campsite. They would be a grind - really tough mentally to force myself to keep going and not just pull over and 'thumb it' to the top. Who's looking, right? That's when you find out what you're made of.

SCENE CHANGE

Another kidney session... You find out it's okay to cry. It's okay to not just wince but crawl into a ball. And if you don't know what's going on it can be really bad. So don't go it alone. Don't survive on a single point of view. Get better information. Find out what you're dealing with and don't go alone. I have Angelina.

SCENE CHANGE

Angelina's a champion putting things together. We're going over to see our airstream. She's been working on getting that deposit money in the bank. The airstream is reserved for us (again). Our summit is within reach

SCENE CHANGE

another kidney session... That was one hell of a hillary step. That session was definitely a 9 or 10 pain level for 30-40 minutes.

SCENE CHANGE

it's been a month. A month. We are finally on our way out of the hotel. Unbelievable downpours, outbursts, unexpected crazy stuff happens. You can learn from crazy stuff.

Just before making a decision that would turn out to be really important to us I found these photos taken just a couple of months before. Wind gusts over the malard bridge, near the snake river. Yeah we all fear this kind of crazy stuff. Imagine hanging over the snake river in your seatbelt, the truck only connected by the hitch safety chains. They were thrown over the guard rail because of sway.

Seeing what they went through was enough for me to learn and to make a decision that we're buying the propride. We're buying the best hitch that we can get to eliminate sway. (You'll see how this became critical for us in a few episodes)

SCENE CHANGE

As I was installing the new hitch...

Angelina: "what are you doing?"

Daniel: "what am... [Emergency system blares] this is only a test this is a test of the warning system...

SCENE CHANGE

The reason we're back at lake pleasant in august is that Angelina has an event going on at the biltmore hotel in just over a week. At this point it's not turning out like she had imagined. It's a beautiful location, but for the covid-19 delta variant.

I'd like for us to consider a moment some subtleties about decision making and choices. As far as grading possible outcomes you can watch the radar, look at the data, predict what may be coming, but you have to classify the risk level and put labels on them. To cancel an event you have to determine whether it is 'certainly disappointing' or 'possibly dangerous' or 'probably disastrous'. Those are all little subtleties that you have to decide based on your vocabulary.

Peter diamantis and his team felt that they had created an immunity bubble for their event. In the end it was disastrous. Read your radar. Look at your data. Come to an agreement on what the label is: 'certainly' 'possibly' 'probably' okay is it 'disappointing'. Is it 'dangerous'. Is it 'disastrous'. Put that matrix together. Make a good choice. Don't just ignore the sign and drive over the bridge.

SCENE CHANGE Angelina: "following peter diamanta's example with his event I just rescheduled my august 20th 2021 event. There was definitely 'certain disappointment' with those that were coming together however the 'probable damage' factor would have been high had I moved forward with it. When you've got the data to support the choices that you make then sharing that data gives others a glimpse on the why. That is really important to reduce the internal squalls that might come out of those decisions."

"On the same day I make the decision to reschedule my event my left leg is swollen and we are off to the emergency room to verify what's going on. The greatest fear is deep vein thrombosis which can be very very dangerous. I could have a blood clot. So we spent the rest of the day, and some of the evening, navigating through that adventure".

SCENE CHANGE

Outbursts come in all sorts of fashions. It can be from other people that intrude in on your plans. About one o'clock in the morning at a pretty decent hotel in Oklahoma City I thought it was fireworks. I couldn't quite understand the popping noises. It was seven rounds of a pistol killing a young woman on the street outside of our hotel room.

When we talked to the investigating detectives they said: "this is highly unusual for this area. But you see what's coming across our southern border. This was most likely related to relationships and obligations."

It really troubled my sleep for several weeks. That was part of the relief of finally getting into our airstream.

SCENE CHANGE

You may have heard the comedian talk about whenever he and his wife argue that she gets historical - not hysterical. Historical.

We have two parts of our brain called the amygdala. I've covered that in book one. Amygdala record emotional memories. They act like our black box of emotional experiences. For guys, they record before we have an emotional vocabulary. They record all kinds of childhood events.

Thanks to cooked food, we have a prefrontal cortex (palm over my forehead). We have the ability to be rational and to persuade ourselves to moderate our behavior, to throttle the emotions that are trying to tell the rest of our lizard brain that we need to go beat stuff up and conquer.

SCENE CHANGE

I just recently took a master class from dr matthew walker: "I believe it is time to reclaim our right to a full night of sleep, and the opportunity for a better life. It is never too late to start sleeping better."

He describes that by shortening someones sleep, the pathways between the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex can be disrupted - so that you have little or no control over your emotions. A lack of sleep can really screw us up, as can a messed up diet.

Squalls are personal. They are outbursts. They come both outward and inward where they choke us. We freeze. We we we become pegged. We have no way of articulating things without an emotional vocabulary. Our wives may think all sorts of things of us. Either we fly off the handle...

SCENE CHANGE

"ahhhgg! I step out the door and a bug flies into my eyeball, and then under the lid. It gets underneath the lid. Ow!"

SCENE CHANGE Or we just don't open our mouths. We bury things. Unfortunately that will result in anger, rage, or frustration finding another organ - going inside and working at us from the inside out. That's not a good lifestyle.

SCENE CHANGE The other day we simply needed to change camp sites after the storm. We dumped our waste and moved to a new spot. I discovered in the process that we were in the wrong spot.

SCENE CHANGE We were supposed to have moved into this pull through for tonight and then moved to where we are now for the following three days. I'm in turmoil because i'm not sure how humans are gonna take it, or when they're gonna take it, or where they are now. They said at the front gate that the registred campers were already checked in but they're not here, and the host doesn't know, and Angelina's tied up with other things, like the duck... And i'm like aa@hhh...

Angelina is very comfortable with working things out on-the-fly. Her experiences are very different than mine.

We made an honest mistake, but, I became really obsessed and um preoccupied with cleaning and killing flies.

Angelina was all good. She's confident it'll work out. "We'll just offer them our space"; she says. It'll be cool

The advantage of developing your emotional vocabulary is to be able to tie the history you have in your amygdala to your prefrontal cortex. Connect your emotions to your will and intent with an emotional vocabulary - not just grunts, yelps or silence.

SCENE CHANGE Following our time in Oklahoma City, obviously we left with the airstream (this time). It's in large part thanks to a greatly patient 'champion' at camping world, named patrick cameron. He worked with us for two and a half months patiently waiting for our stuff to come to fruition and not selling us out to other people. His advocacy was that calm between the storms. We really really appreciate him.

SCENE CHANGE I'd like you to download some apps like windy or weather underground and have a look at some of the forecasting that they do. I use it for my water sports. It's fairly accurate. I plan to take in this canopy in a few minutes because there's a big blast coming from the east with 17 mile an hour winds and possible inch and a quarter hail. That can be quite damaging...

And that's not my point. My point is: I want you to become aware of what goes on between your prefrontal and your amygdala and be able to read those signs. If you don't have your pro and prebiotics for a few days, or you're off of your regular nutrition, or your sleep has gone sideways... Hello! Talk emotions with your partner. Talk emotions with yourself. Bring in your canopy.

I hope in this episode that you'll pick up the subtleties that i'm attempting to communicate. In book one I make a good case for humans being pattern recognizing. We painted narratives on cave walls. We look to the stars and tell stories. We look to the future and make promises, or make our best efforts. You've heard the saying: "when the student is ready the teacher will appear?" I can't explain it fully but you'l notice that if I had not given in or yielded to the delays from the forest fire smoke, and the delays of my previous episodes, or danced with the events as they played out, I certainly would not have been talking about paying attention to what goes on between your emotions and your intent. I would not subtlely be using the analogy of a weather app and the weather and then had the most brilliant demonstration of physics and energy at the same time - as it did last night. I hope you catch that there seems to be a 'dance' we can do with the invisible world.

I experienced this in each of my three trans ams, and now the expeditions we're taking in our airstream. I hope you'll find some evidence to give you faith to start your own expedition by talking to yourself in the mirror, recording your journey in a device, and watching the changes happen for yourself.

It's a really fabulous way out of scotomaville.

Thank you so much for watching.
